Answering Service Cost Calculator
A per-minute answering service charges you more the busier you get. Put in your minutes and the rate you were quoted, and see it next to a flat monthly plan that does not move.
How this is calculated
One side is simple multiplication: your monthly call minutes times the per-minute rate. Live answering services commonly charge $0.75 to $2.50 a minute and add 20% to 40% in overage during a busy month, so the slider runs across that range. The other side is a flat plan that covers your minutes and bills the same amount every month.
That is the whole point of the comparison. With a per-minute service, a great month, more calls, more bookings, lands as a bigger invoice. With a flat plan, the busy month and the slow month cost the same. Below roughly an hour of calls a month, pay-per-minute can come out cheaper; above it, flat pulls ahead and keeps your success from raising your bill.
Set the rate to your own quote. These are typical ranges, not a promise about any one provider.
Questions people ask
How much does an answering service cost per minute?
Live answering services typically charge between $0.75 and $2.50 a minute, with mid-range providers around $1.00 to $1.50, or $5 to $12 per call. Most also add overage of 20% to 40% during a busy month, so the bill is highest exactly when you are doing well.
Is a flat-rate AI receptionist cheaper than a per-minute answering service?
Past a modest call volume, almost always, and the gap widens the busier you get. A per-minute bill rises with every call; a flat plan with an included minute allowance stays the same as long as you stay inside it. Run your minutes through the calculator above to find your own crossover point.
Why do answering services charge per minute?
They staff live operators, so their own cost scales with talk time, and they pass that through by the minute, plus overage when you run long. It is a fair model for them, but it means your cost goes up in your best months, not down.
